How to write a Newspaper Article

So you wish to write an article for a newspaper. Don’t worry it isn’t rocket science (probably even rocket science isn’t that hard). First and foremost you shall have to create a cover letter and a sample of the way in which you write. By sample I mean a small write up not what you did ever since you turned 12. What is the ideal Article size?

This is a question I have been faced with almost every time someone asks me any question regarding writing. The answer can be given by you – yourself. How much would you like to read? When you read any average daily newspaper, how many times have you turned the page when reading one article? Never, Right? That’s the same rule that should follow with your article also. However since we all need definitive answers, I’d say keep your articles at around 500 words or even lesser if you can so compromise. Columns however are 1000 to 1200 words or lesser. These numbers vary paper to paper unless you are required to do otherwise. The difference between columnists and plain article writers is that columnists ideally do not get to choose topics that they wish to write about so be ready to a lot more research than you actually bargained for. The papers would look for a subject and boy – you’d have to conjure up everything you can lay your hands on, err… eyes on.

The taste of a dish that has been cooked reflects the mood that you were in when you were cooking. The same reflects in your writing also. Enjoy it. Unless you feel pleasurable in what you are doing, chances are the end product will be nonsense. Try to define a side that you are on. Wrong or Right. The choice is yours and the way you present it to the reader shall enable them to form their own opinion about the topic at hand. Remember you are not writing a novel or a love story. So stick to the point – especially your argument. Don’t write tall stories that you will not be able to defend later. Stick to one side when you are writing. No reader likes to read something without a solid judgement. Lastly, contact the papers and request them if they wish to have your article printed or if they are looking for articles only on a range of topics. To your Success!
